Daily Delight #62
Learning something new.
I learned consistency is not one of my personal traits. But curiosity is, and I certainly think one is better than the other.
I started a book that used words I’m unfamiliar with. I realized it has been a long time since I’ve read a book with challenging words. Anything contemporary just doesn’t seem to cut it.
I learned my two heritages often come to a head – my model minority Korean self that serves to please and my independent, stubborn Dutch self that just wants to have a damn good time. Quite conflicted.
I learned one of my goals in life is to live like time doesn’t exist.
I fear the Irish is more likely deeper in there than the Dutch. Last I investigated it works out to about 1/32 in your case.
You know, I totally forget that I’m Irish. I was always sort of under the general assumption that my grandma was 100% irish and my grandpa was 100% Dutch. And at best that would make me 25, 25, 50. But this seems unlikely, since I know there was some mention of French and Scottish…? Do you have any idea at least with Raymond and Hugh’s parents/heritage?
From what I can tell your Great Grandmother who died shortly after your Grandfather was born was 100% Irish. She was adopted but her parents were known. They apparently came to some part of upstate New York with a train load of Pittsburg paint every summer to sell. I suspect there was a lot of barn red in there. It was something like consumption that got them and Heather O’dell was adopted out at like 17 to the people who had the store where they sold that paint. Somewhere in there she met your Great Grand Father Ben. This is according to my dad who I really have to fine tune the facts with one of these days. The Dutch side is a bit vaguer. I believe your Great Grampa Ben was in fact only a quarter Dutch, then French and English/Scottish but I am not so sure of how much. You should check out the library in NYC. I have never been there but my brother tells me you can look up the record of the actual landing of the Van De Marks and where they first settled etc. Now you’ve piqued my interest(again)so I will see what I can drag out of my dad and let you know if I come up with anything.
How about your Mom’s side? Is her heritage clear?
Hey, so turns out I don’t know much about this at all. But my sister, who I am currently visiting, is all into tracing our ancestry. If you’re interested in taking a look or helping her out, you can view here:

She only asks that you not directly edit and contact her/me first. She wants to play gate keeper.
I figure when I visit your dad in February, I’ll try and get some info from him too.
